With the Government shamefully failing our most vulnerable people, you would be forgiven for thinking the country was bankrupt

The number of people who are homeless continues to rise while members of the Government argue over how to spend a multibillion euro surplus, according to Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan.

Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“The latest figures show there are now 12,259 people living in homeless emergency accommodation. This is the highest number in the history of the State as it surpasses last month’s grim record.

“Tragically, 3,594 of these are children, representing a 35 per cent rise since this Government took charge

“With the Government shamefully failing our most vulnerable people, you would be forgiven for thinking the country was bankrupt.

“In reality, Government ministers are currently debating how they could spend a projected €65bn budget surplus. This is a slap in the face to the over 12,000 people without a roof over their head.

“Addressing the immediate homelessness crisis should be a top priority for this Government – clearly it is not.

“No child should be growing up homeless while their Government ponders what they should do with billions of euros.”
