Dublin Central TD Gary Gannon has called on the Minister for Education to come into the Dáil next week and account for the latest recall of sanitiser products from schools.

Deputy Gannon, who is the party’s spokesperson on Education, said:

“Just one week after the ViraPro hand sanitiser brand was recalled from schools due to its potential risk to public health, it has emerged this evening that this was far from a one-off incident. With students set to return to classrooms in the coming days, it is deeply concerning to learn that the Department of Education has now written to schools recalling more than 50 products, ranging from hand sanitisers to wipes and soaps.

“Principals, teachers, SNAs and non-teaching staff – not to mention the students themselves – have gone beyond the call of duty to keep our schools open during a global pandemic. This latest development is devastating to the morale of school communities and further undermines confidence in the Department of Education.

“We need a guarantee that safe replacement products will be sourced and provided well in time for our schools reopening on Monday.

“The Minister for Education must come into the Dáil next week and demonstrate some leadership – hiding away from scrutiny is no longer acceptable.”
