It now costs an average of €27,120 per year to rent a house in Dublin – this is utterly unacceptable and unsustainable
The latest Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) Rent Index – revealing rents grew by over 9.2% in the last year – shows rents are completely out of control, says Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan TD.
“Rents are out of control. People looking to rent a house in Dublin today will be charged on average €2,260 per month. That’s €27,120 per year just to rent a house.
“This is utterly unacceptable and unsustainable.
“New rents grew by over 9% in the last year. This is putting enormous pressure on people. This will have a massive impact on students and young people looking for a place to live for the next academic year.
“If you include all types of properties, the average rent in new tenancies in Dublin is €2,015. These massive rents are having huge knock-on effects for people and the wider economy.
“For example, childcare services are operating with reduced capacity as childcare workers cannot find somewhere affordable to live. This is impacting on parents who cannot find childcare places and is impacting on labour market participation.
“The State must start playing a proactive role in providing affordable rental accommodation. We urgently need a rapid expansion of cost rental in all cities.
“The Government must stop using public money to subsidise the provision of very expensive and unaffordable high rent schemes and use this money instead to invest in affordable and cost rental housing.”
