The Social Democrats have called on the Tánaiste to rethink his proposal for a two-thirds majority lock in any law that would follow a repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
The party’s co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said today:
“I very much welcome the fact that Mr Coveney has reconsidered his position on the abortion issue in recent weeks and is now supporting the main recommendation of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment. However, his proposal for a super majority lock on future legislation in this area is ill-thought out and would certainly be unconstitutional.
“If we were to take the proposal to a logical conclusion, it would actually require an additional amendment to the Constitution to deliver it. The Tánaiste needs to seriously rethink his position on this issue.”
