Social Democrats Housing spokesperson and Dublin Bay North TD, Cian O’Callaghan, has highlighted the failure of the Strategic Housing Development process and has called on the Government to end it immediately.
Deputy Cian O’Callaghan said:
“The Department of Housing today told the Oireachtas Housing Committee that only 29% of planning permissions granted under the Strategic Housing Development process have been activated. This is a very significant admission of failure.
“The review conducted last year showed that only 37% of permissions had been activated – this was much lower than expected. Last year, the Minister for Housing said that an activation level of about 80% would be acceptable.
“The SHD process is bypassing local authorities, undermining City and County Development Plans and failing in its key objective of delivering housing on scale.
“The SHD process is fundamentally flawed. It needs to be scrapped. This should happen immediately to avoid a stampede of applications between now and the extended deadline of February 2022.”
