Social Democrats Housing Spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan T.D., responding to reports of a Government decision on a short extension to the ban on evictions and rent increases stated:
“Media reports of a very short extension of the ban on evictions and rent increases until August 1st followed by a ban on evictions until January will heighten the stress and anxiety felt by many renters. It is shambolic that the government is making this announcement hours in advance of the current ban expiring.
“The government should act now to bring clarity, stability and certainty to the private rented residential sector.
“Now is the time to bring Ireland in line with many European countries where the grounds for evicting tenants from their homes are heavily limited and where evictions are used as a last resort.
“Evicting families from their homes is highly traumatic and disruptive – especially for children. The ban on evictions and rent increases has successfully reduced the numbers of homeless people for the first time in years.
“In addition to limiting the grounds for eviction to failure to pay rent and anti-social behaviour, measures to support tenants and landlords are needed. These should include access to fast and effective mediation, payment plans and conflict resolution so that evictions can be avoided where possible.”
