Social Democrats candidate for Dublin Bay South, Sarah Durcan, today called for urgent regulation of the English language school sector following the sudden closure of Grafton College language school.
“It’s not acceptable that 500 students and 20 teachers have been left in the lurch by the sudden closure of this college just weeks before Christmas. Students have paid considerable fees for their education, and teachers deserve to be paid for their work.”
Social Democrats candidate for Dublin Bay South, Sarah Durcan, today called for urgent regulation of the English language school sector following the sudden closure of Grafton College language school.
Ms Durcan said:
“More than 20 English language schools have closed down since 2014, and today we see yet another company go belly up. Students often make great sacrifices to scrape very high fees together, on top of trying to afford to live in Dublin, and they are all too often exploited.
“It’s not acceptable that 500 students and 20 teachers have been left in the lurch by the sudden closure of this college just weeks before Christmas. Students have paid considerable fees for their education, and teachers deserve to be paid for their work.
“Teachers who are trying to do good work in difficult circumstances are also being exploited. Enforceable regulation of this sector is long-overdue. The government must speed up the passage of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance Bill which is currently before the Dáil to give some protections for people learning and working in this highly precarious sector.”
