Catherine Murphy TD, co-leader of the Social Democrats, has called on the Government to ensure that the extension of the commercial rates waiver until the end of September will not impact on the ability of local authorities to provide essential services.

Deputy Murphy said:

“Many businesses impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic were able to avail of a deferral of commercial rates when the crisis hit Ireland back in March. In the stimulus package announced yesterday, the Government confirmed that this waiver would be extended until the end of September as part of a suite of measures designed to assist business owners with cashflow issues.

“However, while every effort must continue to be made to assist struggling businesses, particularly in the retail, hospitality and childcare sectors, it is important that, in doing so, the Government does not deprive local authorities of this core element of their funding.

“Reducing the incomes of local authorities would lead to a reduction of vital public services and I will be seeking assurances on how this gap in funding will be plugged.”
