Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan has called on the Government to use a portion of the Brexit Adjustment Reserve Fund to offset the increased costs faced by low-income households.
Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s spokesperson on Brexit, said:
“The complications caused by Brexit are resulting in increased costs for the supply of some basic household goods, including food. This will hit those on low incomes the hardest.
“We need an urgent independent examination of the impact Brexit is having on the cost of household goods. We need to know by how much prices have or will increase and how Brexit will impact different family types.
“Some of the new €1 billion Brexit Adjustment Fund from the EU must be used to offset any increased costs for those on low incomes. This should be a focused, anti-poverty intervention.
“We must also use this new fund to support our coastal fishing communities who have been particularly affected by Brexit.”
