Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon today called on Minister Donohoe to immediately backdate the payments to women excluded from TWSS because they were on maternity leave.
Gary Gannon TD said:
“As expected, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission has found that the exclusion of women returning to work after maternity leave from the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme breaches Irish obligations under EU law, and that this issue must be rectified as a matter of urgency. This issue was brought to the Minister’s attention weeks ago and while this anomaly may have been unintended, the refusal to rectify this issue has caused considerable distress to mainly low paid women expecting to return to work on full pay.
“This issue must be rectified over the weekend, but the backdating of payments to the women affected processed as a matter of urgency. The hardship this has caused cannot be underestimated. Now that they have been so embarrassingly reprimanded, the Government must move quickly to make this right.”
