Reacting to the publication of the Land Development Agency Bill 2021, Social Democrats Housing spokesperson Cian O’Callaghan TD said:
“The Government plan to sell homes at full market prices on public land is a slap in the face to the thousands of people currently locked out of buying their own home. The core objective of the Land Development Agency must be to build houses at prices that people can afford. This must be its top priority.
“The Government is utterly failing on its promises to deliver affordable housing. This time last year, Fianna Fáil said they would build 50,000 social houses and 50,000 affordable homes. The affordable target for this year is just 400 – that’s less than 1% of their overall promise.
“The cost of housing is having a crippling effect on people. The State must take a proactive role in the building of social and affordable homes up and down the country. That is the only way this housing crisis will be solved.”
