Social Democrats Housing spokesperson and Dublin Bay North TD, Cian O’Callaghan, has welcomed the National Economic and Social Council’s call for bold action to address our dysfunctional housing system.
Deputy Cian O’Callaghan said:
“The National Economic and Social Council is the latest body to call on the Government to do more to address our dysfunctional housing system. The Minister for Housing needs to listen to these calls for fundamental change – and take action on foot of their recommendations.
“In particular, I welcome the National Economic and Social Council’s focus on the need for more affordable housing with a recommendation that the Government establish a national cost rental programme at scale. Last month’s budget was a missed opportunity to provide for such a programme.
“The National Economic and Social Council comprises employers, trade unions, farmers, community and voluntary sector representatives, environmentalists, senior officials from Government departments, as well as independent members. It is telling that such a wide cross-section of Irish society has got behind this call for bold action.
“All that is missing now is bravery and ambition on the part of the Government.”
