The Social Democrats have called for the full transcripts of the O’Higgins Commission to be released so we can finally get to the truth about the aggressive legal strategy pursued against Garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe.
The party’s co-leader Róisín Shortall TD said:
“I welcome the Tánaiste’s resignation, however overdue. But it does point to very poor judgment on the part of the Taoiseach who allowed this issue to fester since Friday night when he came into possession of new information.
Deputy Shortall continued:
“It is clear that the Tánaiste’s departure is by no means the end of this matter. We need to finally get to the bottom of this and see at first-hand the exact nature of the aggressive legal strategy pursued by the former Garda Commissioner’s legal team, and the response of the O’Higgins Commission to that. For the truth to be unearthed, the full transcripts of the Commission’s hearings must now be publicly released.
“There are also obviously still serious questions for the current Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan, and his department in relation to the extent of their disclosure of all relevant information to the Charleton Tribunal.”
