Giving his reaction to the publication of the Bill on Residential Tenancies and Valuations 2020, Social Democrats Housing spokesperson, Cian O’Callaghan TD, said:

“This bill proposes to end the rent freeze and evictions ban for most tenants. If the bill passes unamended, evictions and rent increases will resume at the start of August – except for those who can demonstrate they were in receipt of a Covid-19 related State payment.

“This means that from August 1st, frontline workers who have kept essential services running will be amongst those getting evicted from their homes and facing rent increases. I will be tabling a number of amendments to this Bill to put in place long-term measures to improve security of tenure for tenants in the private rented sector.”
