Half of rough sleepers recorded by homeless outreach team excluded from official figures

Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan has asked the Government to explain why not all rough sleepers have been counted in official figures published by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive.

Deputy O’Callaghan, who is the party’s housing spokesperson, said:

“An article published by the Dublin Inquirer raises serious questions about discrepancies in the figures. It revealed that 180 people were counted as sleeping rough in the capital by the Dublin Simon Community Outreach team last November.

“However, the official figure for the numbers of people sleeping rough, as published by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive, was 91 – just half of that counted by the outreach team.

“How is it possible that half the numbers counted as sleeping rough in Dublin – by a charity working at the coalface of homelessness – were not included in the official figures?

“The Minister must immediately contact the Dublin Region Homeless Executive and ask why so many rough sleepers have been excluded.”
