The Social Democrats are pleased to announce that Repeal activist Carly Bailey has been selected as its candidate to contest the next General Election in the constituency of Dublin South West.
Carly (38) was recently the co-convenor of the Dublin South West Together for Yes group and was the national co-ordinator of the Soc Dems’ Repeal campaign.
A mature student at Trinity College Dublin, Carly and her family have had first-hand experience of the recession, losing their home to a vulture fund.
Speaking after her selection convention last night, Carly said:
“I’m very thrilled and proud to be contesting the next general election for the Social Democrats in Dublin South West. I strongly believe that voters are for looking for candidates who they can relate to and who represent the issues they feel strongly about.
“Our communities face enormous challenges in housing and healthcare – but we have learned these past months that with grass roots activism and bold leadership, change is possible. I for one am determined that what happened to me and my family in the recession won’t ever happen again to anyone else.
“There’s a real hunger and energy among people like myself who campaigned for Repeal to build on last weekend’s momentum to work towards a modern and progressive social democratic republic with fairness and decency as its core values.”
The party’s co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said:
“Carly has enormous compassion and energy and she is driven by her deep commitment to build a decent society where no one is left behind. I know that she will be an excellent public representative for the Dublin South West constituency and will champion investment in people, public services and a vibrant and sustainable economy.”
