Social Democrats Brexit spokesperson, Cian O’Callaghan TD, said it is worrying that the UK Government is seeking to put the blame for severe delays and tailbacks at ports from next January onwards on the shoulders of UK businesses.
Deputy O’Callaghan said:
“This blame game is deeply unhelpful and irresponsible. We need leadership from political leaders to minimise disruption and the economic fallout from Brexit.
“150,000 Irish trucks use the UK landbridge to export three million tonnes of goods to the EU every year. This amounts to some 40% of Irish exports or €18 billion of goods. The landbridge is an essential route for Irish exports to the rest of Europe.
“The Irish Government must do everything within its power to ensure that there are high-speed direct routes in place from January 1 as an alternative to the UK landbridge. It is abundantly clear that we cannot rely on the UK Government to ensure a seamless route through the landbridge for Irish exporters in the New Year.”
