“Co-living is not a solution to the rental crisis, the housing crisis or the homelessness crisis. It is just another easy way for private developers to pile ‘em high in cramped conditions that would make bedsits look spacious.”

The Social Democrats today accused the Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy of allowing developers to maximise profits at the expense of young people desperate for housing in Dublin with his enthusiastic support of “co-living” accommodation.

The party’s co-leader Catherine Murphy TD said:

“The “co-living” model that the Minister is so keen to promote is not a solution to the rental crisis, the housing crisis or the homelessness crisis. It is just another easy way for private developers to pile ‘em high in cramped conditions that would make bedsits look spacious.

“It truly beggars belief that the Minister is publicly endorsing this box-room model of housing which is about maximising profits at the expense of people who desperate for a place to live in Dublin.

“This model of communal living is neither sustainable nor affordable. Instead of prioritising quality and affordable homes to buy or rent, Minister Murphy is championing the downgrading of living conditions and living standards for an entire generation of young people.

“The Minister is pathetically defending co-living as ‘part of bringing greater choice to the housing market’. But the reality is people aren’t being given the opportunity to choose decent and reasonably-sized houses or apartments because Fine Gael government is simply not building them.”
