US President’s visit a reminder of our countries’ close ties and shared history

This week’s visit by President Biden continues a long tradition of friendship and partnership between Ireland and the people of the United States of America, according to Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns.

“Mr Biden will be the fourth US President to address the Oireachtas, following in the footsteps of John F Kennedy in 1963, Ronald Regan in 1984 and Bill Clinton in 1995.

“Given the significant US contribution to peace on this island, it is fitting that Mr Biden’s visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The President’s presence here this week clearly demonstrates Washington’s ongoing commitment to the peace process and sends a strong message of support to all communities.

“The conflict in Ukraine has shown that international cooperation has become increasingly important and that global issues often need global responses.

“Ireland should maintain and build on its economic and diplomatic links to the US. Mr Biden’s visit is a reminder of our countries’ close ties and shared history.”
