The Organisation 

The Social Democrats is a relatively new party, unhindered by the past and the old style of politics. The most prosperous, inclusive and progressive countries on earth are social democracies. We believe Ireland can join this group, and that a great many Irish people want us to. We know that a strong, creative, prosperous, fair, equal and democratic country is not just an aspiration. It can, and should be, Ireland’s reality. We already have six TDs and 20 councillors, and have active branches and members across the entire country. We want to expand the breadth and depth of our Party so that people have the opportunity to vote for open and transparent government, and honest politics that works in the best interests of the people and not the party or the selected few. The role of National Organiser is pivotal to achieving that target. 

The Role 

The National Organiser is a Senior Position within the Party. The person will be responsible for driving the development of the Party organisation at all levels. 

The National Organiser will be a member of the Senior Executive team tasked with ensuring organisational development, policy development, excellent communications, and effective administration. 

Key Terms and Conditions 

The position is based in the Party’s Head Office in Dublin but will entail travel throughout the country from time to time. 

The National Organiser will report to the General Secretary and to the Party leadership as required. 

The contract is for a specified purpose and is linked to the current Dáil term. Salary range is between €55,000 and €65,000 p.a. and will be commensurate with Experience. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Leading the strategic development and effectiveness of the Party 
  • Enabling the political effectiveness of the Party’s councillors 
  • Identifying and supporting election candidates for local and national elections
  • Supporting the work of the Party’s Candidate Strategy and Development Committee
  • Planning and managing electoral campaigns 
  • Leading the development of branches as active local organisations through campaigns and community activities 
  • Ensuring that the activities of branches support the objectives of the Party and are aligned with Party strategy, other Party structures, and the work of Social Democrats’ elected representatives
  • Leading initiatives to drive and maintain membership 
  • Managing engagement and communication between branches and national Party structures 
  • Managing organisational development teams, including interns and volunteers

Essential Requirements 

Demonstrable experience in: 

  • Recruiting and developing members of a relevant organisation, 
  • Working in a political party, in politics, and/or in public affairs, 
  • Communications and social media, 
  • Project management, 
  • Working collaboratively with diverse individuals, teams and organisations, f) devising, planning and implementing local, regional, national campaigns, g) managing a budget, 
  • Devising and implementing education and training programmes, 
  • Event management, 
  • Managing grant applications and fundraising, 

Essential qualifications, skills and knowledge 

  • A minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience 
  • Evidence of excellent group facilitation, training, networking and engagement skills • Excellent verbal communication and personal engagement skills 
  • Demonstrable experience in managing campaigns 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Irish legal and political system, the workings of political parties and the Irish electoral system 
  • Demonstrable experience in the provision of training and education programmes • A track record of political, community and/or voluntary sector activity

  • Self-motivated and able to meet targets 
  • Takes responsibility and is accountable for delivery of agreed objectives/projects • Earns and engenders trust
