Social Democrats General Election Candidate for Roscommon-Galway, Ken Campbell, has expressed grave concern about heavy-handed tactics used in a recent eviction at a farm house in Co Roscommon, as well as subsequent violence at the property over the weekend.

Mr Campbell said:

“I am very concerned about the use of private security men at last Tuesday’s eviction of a farmer from his property in Falsk, Strokestown. The heavy-handed and thuggish way in which the eviction was carried out has caused serious consternation among people locally.

“Court orders must of course be respected, but at the same time it is incumbent on banks to do everything they can to reach resolutions with their customers so that families don’t end up being left homeless and on the streets for Christmas. How can we possibly tackle the homelessness crisis facing the entire country by making more people homeless? Mediation between customers and banks should always be the first and last port of call.

“While local anger and concern is understandable, the scenes of violence at the property over the weekend will not solve the problems facing this family and the many other families across Ireland who are trying to save their homes from repossession by banks or vulture funds.

“Sending in private security contractors from outside this jurisdiction to carry out an eviction of this nature is inappropriate and intimidatory. We saw similar tactics used by unidentified private contractors last September to disperse a group of peaceful protestors in Dublin.”
